How Much is Clutter Really Costing You?

Spoiler Alert: LOTS -possibly even your sex life... (I'll put a link here for that special post - I have to "cough" research some more first...)

Seriously though, CLUTTER KILLS.

Which has me picturing a tower of junk falling on a person, SPLAT. Not what I'm talking about but still funny. Nope, this is actually a serious topic.

Think for a moment. How many storage unit places do you drive by wandering around town? I live by a university so I can easily see 30,  possibly more.

The most popular unit is the size of a single car garage. Filled with stuff. Costing over $100 a month.

Ouch. clutter

"The Self Storage Association reports that Americans spend $24 billion (BILLION) each year to store their stuff in 2.3 billion square feet of these units, an industry which has proven to be the fastest-growing segment of the commercial real estate industry over the past four decades."

The Wall Street Journal calls the industry "recession-resistant."

Here are some more ways clutter costs:

  • Re-purchasing lost items
  • Late Payments from lost invoices
  • Damaged or Expired items
  • Time wasted with excessive storing rituals
  • Storage Units

clutterThe Huffington Post has this shocking tidbit. "There are more self-storage facilities in America than there are McDonald’s restaurants, according to a recent report from the commercial real estate publication REJournals. There were 48,500 self-storage facilities in America at the end of 2014, Curbed points out, compared to a mere 14,350 McDonald’s restaurants.

Yeah, apparently we love stuff more than Big Mac's. Who knew?

While we understand what happens to our health and relationship if we eat too many empty calories did you realize that clutter is a huge cause of relationship issues? Not just romantic either but with relatives.

The damage to relationships costs you in a number of ways that can include counseling costs.

Clutter can make it hard to clean.

Which of course means you clean less. Which can contribute to many health issues. No joke.

This is for real.

Mental Health is also closely tied to physical health. Clutter increases the likelihood of depression, anxiety, contributes to ADD/ADHD symptoms, etc... Which costs you trips to the doctor, scripts, counseling and more.

However, did we end up like this? clutter

I didn't even get to the costs associated with:

Career - lost promotion, missed opportunities

Education - poor grades, lost papers, poor presentations

Weight - yes, clutter can help make you fat.

Intelligence - makes you feel ill-equipped, contributes to feelings of memory loss.

Whew.

I don't know about you but I'm ready to clean up. I'm not interested in paying extra fees for junk!

You're smart - I can tell - you're reading my blog. You know I'm not just advocating throwing things away.

But America - this costs too much.
