Time to organize your kid's toys? Let the Toy Library help!
We’ve all been there, that moment when you’re just sure you’ve purchased the toy of your child’s dreams! The toy they will love and cherish one day mentioning it with nostalgia when you’re both adults vacationing together someplace splendid.
You glance around your house, your eyes lingering on the whimsical sign a friend got you, “Excuse the mess, we’re making memories.” It’s the battle cry of the exhausted mother that wants to be able to sleep at night without overwhelming guilt for all the stuff that lingers around the house.
Visions of a manageable amount of toys dance through your head but this is no dream, this is a system that makes you look like a genius! Start by going through your kids toys and toss all the broken stuff into the trash.
It’s okay, it was broken.
Do this with items missing pieces that make it impossible to play with.
Pull out toys that are no longer age appropriate to donate or store for future children. (I say, for future children but just give them away Momma. You and I both know this is a weird pile of stuff to hog room in your closet.)
Grab a bin. A big one. You know, REALLY BIG. Make sure it’s not see through. You don’t need your precious angel pining for something just out of reach. I have two kids so I’ll grab two bins but this is entirely up to you and the amount of toys you are tackling.
Put the favorite toys neatly into the playroom, basket in the living room, shelf in their bedroom. If you need help with systems to corral the clutter, you know you need only ask for help.
Put the Library Bin in a space that is not for Play. Your closet, the Laundry Room, the garage. It’s important that this bin remain separate and can’t be “accidentally” yet totally on purpose be added back into normal play.
Now it’s time to for the MAGIC! On a schedule of your choosing (It’s good to be a Parent!) let your adorable precious snuggle buddy choose to exchange a toy in the play room for a toy in the LIbrary Box. Feel free to do this once a week, as a special reward, or perhaps once a month. You’re MOM, you choose how you want to roll with this. However, consistency is key. They can exchange more than one toy at a time, but make sure it’s one toy in, one toy out. There’s no “I’ll bring you one toy and you give me two from the bin.” Equal exchanges only, kids.
Now sit back, enjoy how smart you are. You’ve got a system in place that lets your kids have way too many toys but they all manage to feel new and fresh daily. Your house isn’t overrun with the previously forementioned excess and you can sit back and start dreaming again of grown up children that really appreciate all you did for them.
I can picture it now…..
“Mom do you remember the toy library?”
“Of course, darling” I smile, and admire my pedicure.
“It was so much fun. I felt like I got a new toy every day.”
“You’re so smart Mom.”
